To be honest it is not surprising and I can see their point. The advertising is misleading!

I think the problem is that an IP is involved and in many cases many are busy to explain what is involved.

Thankfully this site can inform by debate what the consequences are.

Hopefully, as a forum we might soon be able to link up with Charities and Governmental bodies and hopefully the Professional accountancy bodies to assist us to provide a forum for those who are raelly suffering financially.

Let's face it IVA's are very good vehicles and despite my experience I would have gone for that option but would have done things differently!

Interesting article, thanks for the post sonyse2t5! However I don't think that just because there are a few bad companies out there that everyone should go through the CAB.

Everyone considering an option to their debt problems should do their homework and contact 2 or 3 companies to gain advice.

Hi
I agree.
The whole IVA industry is tainted in the eyes of the media.
Lets remember that an IVA is an excellent and fair way to deal with serious debt and allows a person to repay as much as possible whilst giving them a chance to rebuild their life.Yes there are problems out there with IVAs but fundamentally they are an absolute godsend for those in debt.

My first port of call when I relised I was in trouble was the CAB. I saw a money expert who gave me some options and then arranged a meeting with Grant Thornton. I met them at the CAB and spent some hours going though all my options. I found neither side judgemental and as a result of this I now have a F&F IVA.
IVA completed

I think peoples opinion's on this will differ , those with bad experiences will probably agree with the article. Large co's can be impersonal and offer a poor level of service.

But do remember that there is only one professional body suitably qualified to give proper insolvency advice, and that is the insolvency practitioner.

Accountancy qualifications, followed by a number of years practical experience and pretty difficult insolvency examinations lead to the obtaining of an insolvency licence. They do not give these away easily, and at the end of the day you do get what you pay for.

Hi
Read the article and it was the usual nonsense of free is best. As melanie says you pay for what you get. There are some excellent IVA and debt management companies who provide an excellent service. AS for the CAB sorting out complex debt problems efficiently and speedily, well this is not my experience. You wouldnt expect a divorce lawyer to be free so why should debt solution companies. If you are not in a position to be able to afford debt repayments and a reputable and recognised debt solution provider can present a proposal to your creditors to that effect, then any costs/fes are managed from the full payments the creditors are not receiving until the final arrangments are in place. This seems to me a perfectly reasonable position.

we are setting up a dept managment plan with the help of the CAB and they have been great. we do not have to pay them for any help has it is funded through the govenment. i was frantic with worry before we spoke to them has the cccs recommended bancrupty straight away with no ther options. when we spoke to the lady from CAB who is a debt managment professional she said that bancrupty was not an option for us has we mortgage our property and it was render us homeless not a good idea with 2 young children. they really put my mind at rest. sorry the CAB seem to be getting a bit of slating andd although its early days yet i personally cannot fault the advice they've given us
