After almost 10 years of not having an NHS dentist,5 years of not seeing a dentist, last year I finaly found an NHS dentist to recieve the free treatment I have am entitled to.On my second check worried me and I really think he is fiddling by telling me I need treatment I dont need.
To cut a very long story short I would like to take a dental plan out to help with the cost of a private dentist the one that I am going to see for a second opinion. I am unable to locate another NHS dentist willing to take me on.
I recieved a cost of living pay rise which will obviously show at my 1st year review will it be ok to use my pay rise on dental insurance? I would really like to do so but what worries me is if I cant use it and have to pay my pay rise over as well as my tax credits decreasing by £70 per mth also in April which wasnt written into my proposal it will leave a rather large hole.
Thanks in advance
Dee
P.S. Can anyone recommend a good plan?

I think that to fund a private dental plan you may have to make savings from your other allowances. However, I am not sure about this, so hopefully Mel can assist with advice on this.
NHS treatment isn't free though. They will charge but have a maximum they can charge and this will be displayed in your dental surgery.
It is a lot cheaper than going private.

As a single parent I am exempt from NHS charges. As a I have moved around the country following my ex husband (not stalking him we were married at the time!!)my only option for many years was private dentristry so my children could have NHS treatment. When husband left I couldnt afford private treatment so just went without seeing a dentist.
I am blessed with good teeth and never had any treatment in my 35yrs. So imagine my suprise when I go to my check up that my dentist tells me I need root canal treatment, filling and inlay or have my tooth extracted when I dont even have toothache and all without an x-ray.
The local health authority dont have to find me a dentist as I have one but one in my eyes is out to rob the NHS and me of a lovely smile.
I would of just liked my pay rise to help with this cost as well as the £70 decrease of tax credits.

Have to say that my NHS dentist is great and I have never had anything other than necessary treatment.

Most are great and its great and even better if you can get an NHS one!!
I am just staggered I can go from having a healthy free of fillings mouth to needing a tooth worthy of extraction and not knowing!!! I am going to a private practise who are doing a second opinion my mum bless her paying for the priviledge as she is disgusted by him not x-raying me first!!

It doesn't seem right that you need that treatment doing without a proper examination. I think that Denplan is one of the better schemes around, and I think that some private dentists will give you a free examination if you indicate to them that you are going to sign up - might be worth looking into just to get that second opinion.
It is £60 for an initial check up and x-rays and the second opinion. I have been totally honest with them, telling them the situation. Unfortuantly the East mids/east coast is well known for a lack of dentists and many that I called are not taking on privately either as there is such a demand.
My children now go to my old family dentist with my mum ,120mile away as that was the only way I could afford for them to have treatment but he couldnt take any more adults on.
Its just another set back that makes me feel even worse about my debts and my IVA sure i will get my head round it.

Would you be allowed to put one of these schemes down in an IVA Mel?

It is possible that the dentist is correct though cos for 30+ years I needed nothing doing & now have a few fillings. The dentist did do x rays though. But my point is, having children plays havoc with your teeth!!!
I would be happy to allow this Jan - health teeth are an important part of life, and the five years that they may not be being properly looked after could have serious and expensive implications into the future.
I do agree Mel. I have a mouthfull of fillings and crowns and hope that when I go for a checkup next month I don't need anything doing!

A very good friend of mine is an expert in nutrition, and(free of charge!)he has devised a plan for me, changing my diet to good effect and recommending certain(expensive)supplements to go with my nutrition plan which maintains my general well being,I have taken this action he recommends for me as I am on prescribed drugs for Parkinsons' and had not been 100% for some time! But all of this is really beneficial to me and enables me to continue my occupation, pay my bills, and I haven't had a day off sick since 2003. I really recomend a hair analysis test which is better than a blood test as it really highlights the mineral deficiencies in your body and how to correct them! However,to continue the thread - dentristry is his biggest bugbear and for the last year I have been inundated with advice to go to see a Holistic Dentist who can remove the poisons in my mouth (12 fillings), which I am informed, as they leak are slowly poisoning me along with the majority of the British populace. A Holistic Dentist will remove the Mercury and Amalgam fillings and replace them with a non-toxic substitute. The only thing that has deterred me is the price of between £90 - £160 per tooth!! So I cannot afford it being in an IVA, but scoff as some of you may, I seriously believe that what they use to fill our teeth is a toxic time bomb!
