I suffer from cold sores quite regularly and it usually looks like I have been punched in the mouth. My whole mouth swells up and part of the side of my face usually. I never get "that tingling" feeling either because I like you Skippy wake up with them! In the 16 years that I have suffered from them, I have yet to find anything that really works, as I find things like lip balm, vasaline and Zovirax make it a lot worse. I usually end up taking nurofen for the pain and the swelling and sit there with cold wet bits of tissue to help with that burning sensation. Not a pretty sight but I do find it works for me.

Will have to give the garlic a go though (cant stand it but I suppose the capsule form might be ok as Lily suggested?) Interesting that sunlight could play a part, never knew that. I have always put them down to being low and run down even if I didnt feel it. I also find the healing just as bad as the blisters as again I cant put any balm on so my lips get really dry and then everytime I smile, the scabs start to bleed. Anyone any suggestions on a lip balm that I could try (ie sensitive and free from smells/flavour etc etc)?

Hi Kand

I emailed my collegue yesterday, for skip, she has her own practice and is into homopathy. I dont know if this will help, we are not allowed to recommend stuff like this on the NHS, you know??? Cos they are not scientifically tested. This is a natrual choice

Here goes. Melissa leaves, dried and put into boiling water which is then strained, allow to cool, put into a clean bottle and use as lip balm every day, apply with cotton wool. This is a preventative not a cure, she also mentions lemon balm.

Hope this helps

I'll give that a try Lily.

Kandh, I have the same problem - the my face and the glands in my neck swell up and it's itching like mad. I usually end up with a lovely scab and a scar that takes ages to go.

OT, like Chris I'd rather have the cold sore!

Thanks Lily. Will try that. Skippy - and theres me thinking I was the only one!!! LOL. My brother gets them but just a little blister, 2 days later its gone! Its not fair!!

And like everyone else, no matter how desperate I get, a cold sore wins every time over a cows bottom!

My friend gets them on her cheek under her eye, she has them for 2-3 weeks, very sore looking and painful. I'm pleased I don't get them, I haven't had chicken pox either, same viral family. Considering all 4 kids have, I reckon I must be a carrier.

I've never had chicken pox and a few years ago I had a blood test and was told I was immune to it.

When I was pregnant with my 3rd whose now 11, one of the Dr's at the hospital had chicken pox so I had to have a blood test. Showed I hadn't had it so I needed a course of injections, cost over £2500, to prevent me developing it. I was informed by the midwife it wasn't risky having it while pregnant though. Found out yrs later it can cause malformations in the baby...no wonder they were keen to give me those injections!!! [:(!]

Hi Skippy

I really really know exactly what you mean by these horrible cold sores! I used to get them when very stressed and run down but have not got one for 3 years now thank god! but i think that is because I continually use CYMEX lip cream, it's brilliant and in a yellow tube. I dont go anywhere without it. I sometimes notice I can feel a cold sore beginning like that awful throbbing feeling in the lip but soon as I apply the CYMEX it goes - wonderful stuff!

Hope this helps

Thanks everyone - it seems to be growing by the minute so I'll have to try something else. It's also itching like mad and it's taking all my self control not to rub it!
