Im not sure if this will be a lot of use to some forum members.
A few years ago, just after we bought our council house, we were told about the warm front scheme.
Basically they pay up to certain ammounts for homeowners or private tennants who have no central heating or a heating system in need of repair.
We qualified and our central heating was installed free of charge. It took a few months from the initial telephone call to the day it was fitted.
Anyway i am posting a link for anybody that wants to have a look just incase.

Another freebie if you are in receipt of certain benefits like Disability allowance (there are more but I forget what they are), you are entitled to free cavity wall insulation and loft insulation. We had ours done at the end of last year and it seems to have made a difference to our gas bill
