Hi Scott

An interesting thread, I can understand that on an open forum an IP will give best advice while others look on, however what about some of the nationals who advertise on day time TV and the Sunday papers, who have collosal advertising budgets which need to be replenished , have they set up call centres with targeted staff who also have to budgeted for, to reject average fees of between £5k to £8k in marketing IVAs, I think not, or are they doing the right thing and advising some clients that perhaps bankruptcy is the best option because unlike an IVA it cannot fail, there is no dividend to meet, and its discharge in 12 months, I dont think so, you are right Scott some are saying you will lose your home, you cannot go bankrupt, the Judge will insist on an IVA, only recently a client of mine came out of the pub industry broke but in the fortunate position he had a decent surplus each month because two of his four children were in receipt of DLA although both parents were out of work, no property after he asked for help he was hounded day and night from a firm in Manchester telling him he had to do the IVA because of the surplus, after getting involved in this I ensured he was later called by the salesmans supervisor to get an unreserved appology.

Money,Debt,Credit used to advertise all the while on TV when we were looking at sorting ourselves out. They were the ones who told me that an IVA was not an option at all but we had to go bankrupt so I have to disagree with you there Major.

The second company we tried told us that they were 93% sure we could get an IVA and they then said we couldn't as we had too much DI.

I know there are unscrupulous companies out there but the respectable ones - and there are a lot of them - should not be tarred with the same brush.

As I have mentioned before, my company advised BR as the preferred route (as dictated by my services) and the option they were likely to benefit from most in terms of fees(DMP) was last in their list of recommendations. So they, at least, weren't "shooting for a quick buck".
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

It is always a shame when my profession generally gets slated due to one bad experience of one client. Not that I need to justify the way I deal with clients, but rest assured there are many, many good and decent IPs our there which far weigh against the bad apples. And of course none of us are perfect, but the very vast majority are completely no motivated by the amount of fees we can charge - which is any case has been cut to ridiculous levels by creditors over the last few years.

Well said Melanie - the good far outweigh the bad in my opinion.

It's the same across any profession, just hope people have the sense not to tar everyone with the same brush.

Hubby didn't have a good IP (by any stretch of the imagination), but I would still have gone done the IVA route...just with a different company.
