Only if you have some good system restore points to work from failing that the repair mode from the cd may help.

If you've not got a good anti virus and firewall package I'd well recommend installing one.

Can you recommend a firewall / anti virus? We've got McAfee at the moment, which is marginally better than Norton but I'm still not impressed!

AVG is another good free virus checker to get.

I am using Norton at the moment and think it is quite good, but will revert back to AVG when my subscription runs out.

Zone Alarm is a good one too.

I usually have quite a bit of anti spyware stuff on my computer too.

Thanks Ray not in Yorkshire but in Lincolnshire so not a million miles apart. Hopefully with help from the forum which I never would of thought of asking for we might be able to get a fix? Here's hoping.

Daughters laptop is a HP Pavillion dv6000
goes to start up but then comes up with
Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as: load needed DLLs for kernel. Please ocntact your suport person to report this problem.

my laptop is a Advent 7105PA it turns on fine and then says we apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Know Good Configuration to revert to the most recwent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was preessed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.

Then the options of Safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last know good configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start Windows Normally, then a time down till it tries to restart. I've tried all options and it's not having any of them I'm afraid.

Daughters is the good laptop, mine is a cheapie, guess which one I paid for and which one Grandma paid for! lol

We don't have CD's for either as neither came with them, I am very articulate in storing/filing things and know this is true, mine is secondhand but have no disk to go with it. Hers was brand new about a year and a half ago.

Sorry you are having problems Lesley.
My laptop broke the other week and now the internt is playing up - I feel my laptop will be broken again soon. Fortunately I live with someone who is too clever for their own good and can tend to fix and problems I create on computers - I'm rubbish! Good luck.

OOh a virus! she has Norton on there so no idea how she managed that one! Will have to wait now to see if it can be fixed, it's like another language to me too but I can follow instruction so you never know we might get one if not both of them fixed. x

Getting a lot of head shaking now! He said MIGHT be a virus - getting stroppy as I don't understand [;)]

He said mumbling sounds like windows specific error.

If he mumbles anything else in my direction I'll post it. XX
