I thought you needed a landline for Sky TV?

Sorry, I misread the post [:I]. Yes, you do have to have a landline for Sky.

You dont need a landline for sky they prefer you do but will install it without, my brother in law had sky installed in a rented flat without a BT line. Obviously I think they charge for content like films, football using the line so perhaps these features are disable on install?

That's a new one on me. I know everytime we have had problems with Sky they have always told us that the equipment needs to be connected to the phone line.

I've just checked on the Sky website and you don't need a landline for TV, but you do need one for Broadband.

Yes I know I was surprised too when I saw he had it installed! That said, I dont actuallyp plug my box in to the line due to the locations of the box and socket... Have been with sky 4 years... never had a letter moaning about it yet!

I'm very surprised that you don't need a landline as they do updates through the phoneline.

You do need it for broadband though.

When we were at the flat it hardly ever used to be plugged into the phoneline and they used to contact us telling us that they couldn't run updates.

Very strange!

They've obviously changed things - it does say on the site you don't need it for TV, although how you get any updates otherwise I don't know.

Yes you do need a line for sky broadband, you need a sky line to benefit from the cheaper packages. Where sky cant provide a line they will offer you Broadband connect at £17 per month (iirc), this is just where they dont have hardware in the BT exchange (LLU).

I dont know too much about the sky box... can updates not happen over the air? I will have a looky...

Perhaps they can now, but I know you always used to have to be plugged in to a BT line.

This is what it says on the website about Broadband:

If you currently don't have an active landline we can't offer you Sky Broadband at this time. We may be able to arrange a new Sky Talk Phone Line however, see below for more details.

We can only supply Sky Broadband and Talk on working, active BT compatible lines. You can order a new phone line from Sky however, with either of our Sky Talk call packages and we will arrange installation for a one-off additional set-up fee of £39. Once your line is active you can check the Sky Broadband availability in your area.

Can't see anything about any other way of getting it.

It's broadband you need the landline for, they have obviously done away with the need for it on the TV.

I looked it up on the Sky website.
