You're lucky if you can get to speak to anyone in a branch now. It's all automated, and if you dare to go to a window (there are only two in our local branch), you have to stand in a queue a mile long and it takes them all their time to be civil to you. I'm sure they prefer that we use the machines so they can sit and look efficient

I banked with Halifax, and they sent me a card valid for 4 months, I rang and asked and they said, it was becuase of a sudden change in my credit file, I said I just gone insolvent, they replied and said they probably wont offer me the account, but I can try,

So I moved to Thinkbanking.

Thanks Viki. Thats what I thought! I used to b***** live in Shanghai! This friend said it stood for (wait for it) High Street Banking Coorpiration. Why on earth did I doubt myself? But I like learning what things mean. Only just found out what MOT stands for!

Thanks for all the pointers folks, RBS was one of my creditors (mint) so will be steering well clear of them unfortunatly.
Also I think I may leave the co-op cashminder as the final resort, my smile account is actually co-op and reading around the posts, it looks like co-op don't like you having a smile account but ok with the cash minder so rather than invite interest in my smile account, I think I would rather just leave them alone for now.
But will certainly look at the nationwide flex account and also possibly Barcleys
Cheers Again

The Halifax and Clydesdale Bank have no doubt change their policy. I know a guy who has a basic account with Clydsdale Bank with a masetro card opened at a branch. No problems. He said he was on an IVA. The Halifax would do the ID check with Passport/driving Id etc but did not do the electronic Experian check...till now?

Th Banks are been squeezed on their customer account business so they don't make as much money as they used to....the OFT Bank charge case is still on appeal with £500 million of payouts due if they lost. So I suppose Basic account are subsidised by other fees and charges which are going to be cut.Leading to less Basic Bank accounts been offered??

We banked with one of my creditors - Barclays and so changed to a basic Nationwide flex account with just a cash card. Bit of a bind, but at least I can transfer money via the internet.

We have left the Barclays account open - it has all of 45p in it! We have filed away the debit cards and put the cheque book away. As long as they don't close it, I shall keep it open until my IVA has finished so that at least I have a cheque book when I am solvent again!

Andy is right, I am guessing your sortcode ends 49, which when run through direct debit system will bring up your branch as "Customer Services", Balloon Street, Manchester.

MOT - Ministry of Transport Test!

Yeah I have had problems too trying to open a Basic Bank Account with Natwest - apparently I can't open a Basi Bank Account if I've got another account elsewhere (HSBC).

Trying RBS now online...

Hey snowman,

Thanks for that!(MOT)[:I]

Don't forget if you have an account with HSBC and you do an IVA, they apparantly scour the insolvency register and if you're on it....they give you a months notice and then close your account![:(] so you should probably close it soon.
