Hi
It is very common for the application to be referred.
You will be fine, I'm sure

Thanks Andy.
I really hope so because Co-op would be the best option for me. Not least because it's actually a bank where there is a branch near to me if I ever needed to go in to see someone.

I think you mean the Step account.

As long as NatWest are not one of your creditors, it should be fine.

Again I can't use NatWest because they are linked to RBS, which is another one of my creditors.
My creditors are:
Barclays
Lloyds TSB
Lombard (RBS)

So really - Co-op or Nationwide would be best options - although as I mentioned, Nationwide don't do a debit card which would be a bit of a problem for me.

Nationwide are upgrading the cards for the basic account as from the middle of the year.

If the Co-op do reject you, try Yorkshire Bank. I believe that you can pay into that via the Post Office.

The opening of a step account with NatWest, would not be affected by the fact that you have debts with other parts of the RBS Group.

Really is that right?
Why is that? Because Payplan have made it quite clear that Nat West and RBS are linked and therefore NatWest could have right to offset.
Having said that, my Lombard RBS loan is one of the smallest ones left!

They may be linked, but the different brands are run as independent entities and there is no right of set off.

I was told exactly the same thing, although not by Payplan. We a loan with Lombard Direct and I had a credit card with them and we were told to steer clear of NatWest.

So does this mean I could go for a NatWest account or not?
I will await the outcome of my Co-op application first. I need to get an account set up before 10th April because that's my payroll deadline. If I can't get it set up before then, that sets me back another month.

Hi,

One of my creditors were RBS and Melanie is right. They operate as separate entities. I applied for a current account with Natwest with a debit card and cheque book ( after being rejected by HSBC)and got one straight away. I applied on line and got an instant decision. That way you avoid the embarrassment of being rejected in the branch.
Good luck!
Mim

OK so can I just confirm that if I apply for a NatWest Step account, I won't have any problems.
My creditors are as follows:

Lloyds TSB (2 loans, one credit card, one overdraft).
Barclays (one credit card, one overdraft).
Lombard Direct (one personal loan)
Dell Finance (one personal loan).

If I can have a guarantee from one of the experts that NatWest will not be able to use right to offset against my Lombard Direct RBS loan, I will apply for this.
Thanks

No one can guarantee for you the action of a bank - regardless of whether you have debt with an associated bank or not.

If it's any help, Nat West do a savings account (with cashcard) but don't do credit reference checks

I wouldn't worry too much we applied for a co-op account 3 months ago and I was told it had been referred. I rang 5 days later as requested to be told yes it is open and information is on it's way, and it was. Fingers crossed the same will happen to you. Good luck
