Whilst at the bank today the cashier asked me if I'd like to upgrade my basic account to a current account. I told her no and said that I was happy with the account I have. Is it possible to have a current account (without overdraft and cheque book) in an IVA?
If your bank will let you do that, then yes it is. You can have a cheque book if they will let you have one.

I have a cheque book and card on one account which I use for daughters school. The other is a Natwest Solo which I'm very happy with the cashier asked me the other day to upgrade, I made a quick exit by saying ooh some other time or I'll be late for work! I wouldn't dare go through the check to be refused. x
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.
Hi
I have a silver current account with Loylds TSB - which has a cheque book & visa debit card & Online Banking - NO Overdraft though.
Only thing is it costs 7.95 a month as you get mobile phone insurance/AA breakdown cover & something else to do with being abroad!!!
At the time of starting the process of the IVA Loylds TSB were the only one not linked to any of my creditors (at the time) & they were just getting rid of their Basic Account. So they asked us if we wanted the sliver account with free overdraft - NO! I ended up explaining we were applying for an IVA & were not allowed any credit. Then we thought No we are doomed - but they said thanks for your honesty & No problem, Account Sorted!
I also got a basic account at Yorkshire Bank with Maestro Card & Online banking - cos they are owned by the bank of Australia! This was my back up account - which I now use one for bills & the other for shopping!
Final IVA payment made in April 2013, never ever thought we could do it or get through it but we did! X

Thanks everyone. I was under the impression that you had to have a basic account with no cheque book, etc. When we first opened the account just before going into the IVA they suggested we open a current account but were refused.
Although we both use a Nationwide cash card account, we still have our Barclays account open (my creditor, not hubby's) and still have the debit cards and cheque book even though we don't use it at the moment.

abbey up graded my bank account to a cuurent visa electron with cheque, then 12 month later they gave me a credit card with a £4400 overdarft limit, but still would not give me a visa debit card, mad mad world
abbey were the only ones that helped me open an account with debit card when the rest told me where to go. so for my sake hope this bank doesn't collapse too!!
