Thanks guys,

Much appreciated. It's early days and quite daunting but I'm feeling much better having surfed this site and taken the first step.

Good luck for the 28th Barb!

As regards payments at the start of your IVA, we are with Payplan and they had said that we should send cheques post dated until the date of our meeting. We are unable to do this as we have a basic account with no cheque book or a debit card. We informed them of this and they said they were quite happy to wait until after our meeting.

Don't know how other IP's go about this

I am a police officer currently putting together an IVA.Im in the same boat as you and not sure wether to disclose to welfare? Its ok being open and honest but the way our proffesional standards work no doubt they will want to investigate? (outsiders looking in wont realise the interregation and internal policing we suffer!). Cant see how were breaking any rules as we are still lawfully discharging our debts? Only issue is if they do find out and throw the honesty and integrity rule at us?

I don't see how they can find out if you don't tell them. I doubt if professional standards trawls through the insolvency register, and unless you default on your payments I would imagine you can just carry on as you are. Your finances are no ones business but yours

Hi
I asked a similar question a couple of days ago only I am going for a job interview with the Police (civilian) & the prospect of offering me a job as I am currently in an IVA looked slim from the advice I was given.
Can I assume that if you're already employed you should be ok but they won't employ anyone who's in an IVA? That seems very unfair to assume prospective employees may be open to corruption but existing employees are not (not suggesting that any of us would get involved in corruption of course, I think we have done the decent & honest thing by owning up to our finance situation in the first place).

I agree, judging from what I have read on this forum not everyone declares they are in IVA or considering it - I know I wouldn't, not to my employer anyway. It is not going to make me any better or worse at my job.

You should apply for the job you want and see what happens. The only thing you have to lose is a bit of your time. I think I remember your post - go for it.

I think they want to know in case they consider you in a position to accept money as bribes. That's the only thingI can think of and I would at least check out your intranet or members handbook.

Non disclosure can be deemed gross misconduct in some firms (there's a lady here that worked for ING and she was summarily dismissed because of her IVA). You have taken the first brave step to owning your debt - the last thing you would need is any problems in repaying once the IVA is set up.

Do you have a union rep ? I know they can be a thing of the past in some places, but if you have one, they would be able to find out without giving any names.

SLM seems you don't already work for them then you have nothing to lose - go for it!
If they say no ask for feedback, all police forces offer this.

Hi Provident,

My Husband is a Police Officer, we are coming up to our first yearly review. We have never been questioned as regards our financial situation and keep it our own business.

We also started out going through Thomas Charles and have now got our IVA with Accuma.

You are also a human being behind the uniform[:)]

It is the best move we ever made to sorting out our finances, a struggle at times as most people would agree on here but it will be well worth in it the long run.

Good luck to you hope all goes well[:D]

Wow guys,

I'm just home from a long shift and amazed and grateful to all the replies. I really am in a pickle as to whether to disclose to work or not. And at what stage? I think I will make an anonymous call to the federation in the next few days for some advice.

I'm sure there must be many cops struggling financially and in IVA's and I bet most of them have not disclosed. But as Anias743 says professional standards can be b*****s and the last thing I would need is to lose my job!!

I would probably be ok if I didn't need to have higher vetting for a position within the job. Which is part of my concern as I have recently applied for a role where if successful I would need such vetting... Do I withdraw my application or try get the IVA up and running and then declare it before/during the vetting process?

SLM - I think you would be ok as they are unlikely to check the insolvency record and being in an IVA should not automatically exclude you from applying? Surely that would be unethical. Good luck with the interview.

Thanks again everyone for all the comments and advice.

If you are going for DV, then this will involve a detailed financial questionnaire and the IVA will be found at that time - so probably better to disclose to your bosses.

Could I suggest that you have a look at Mike Thomas who trades as the Debt Wizard's website. Mike is an ex-policeman himself, and knows the majority of the police forces in the UK - so he may be able to give you some tips specific to your own force.
