Hi All, wonder if you can help! We had British Gas out yesterday, as we have just signed up to their boilder breakdwon cover, and theu came out to do an initial assessment. Anyway, they told us they couldn't cover the boiler as it was unsafe and in the wrong position! The boilder is giving out 75 Carbon Monoxide omissions and the maximum should be 40! Also the boilder flute is leading to the entry and there is a crack in the wall, so the emissions are leading back into the house, in my sons bedroom! The British Gas guy turned the boilder off, due to it being unsafe, and have said we need to purchase a new boilder and have it put in a completeley different place! This will cost in excess of £1000! I e-mailed my IP yesterday (Wilson Philips), and requested a 3 month break in payments, ato try and save the money to pay for the boiler! What do you think the realistic chance of having this request granted, will be! Our monthly payment is £420, and we would try and catch up, by paying an extra £100 a month - thanks guys

Hi

Wilson Phillips will need to get creditors consent to the payment holiday but given the circumstances and assuming that you are up to date with your monthly payments I can't see that creditors would have a problem.

Good luck with it all

I would be tempted to get an independant company to look at the boiler just to make sure British Gas arent ripping you off!!!

Your Ip will have little choice other than to accept this given that you must have heating and you wont pay much back if you succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning!!!

Defo get someone else to quote for the work as its a lot of money to spend.
Discharged today the 8th feb 2012. View is much brighter now.
Continuing to rebuild our credit worthiness.

Hi Emma,

My Hubby has worked in the Plumbing & Heating Trade for over 25 years and says that British Gas are inclined to try and frighten people in this way, as the fitters get a bonus for new installations sold from their leads. On many occasions they condemn an installation and state that it is unrepairable, when parts are still available to solve the problem at reduced cost.

Unlike the days when they were a Nationalised industry, British Gas are no longer the authority in the industry and are now no different to any other installer, but because of their name a lot of people don't realise this.

Depending on the type of Boiler and the installation required, you could pay as little as £600 for a replacement with obviously fitting on top ( a straight swap should take no more than 2 days so expect from £200 to install)

Pop down to your local plumber's Merchant before committing as, while they are generally unable to "recommend" (as this implies they have vetted the installer), they know who the good fitters in your area are likely to be and will generally steer you in the right direction.

MOST IMPORTANTLY ONLY USE CORGI REGISTERED INSTALLERS FOR GAS WORK!

Hope this helps and Good Luck .
IVA accepted 13/11/2008..17 payments down,55 to go..

We must have been lucky with the British Gas engineer who came out to us - he told us we had the Rolls Royce of boilers and recommended that Dave fit a new thermostat in the living room and a 'basket' over the boiler vent to save paying British Gas prices!

Good luck with getting this sorted out Emmaxpete x

A faulty boiler is a serious health and safety hazard and its repair must take priority over and above anything. Your IP would be negligent in their duty of care to you if they refused the payment holiday - and I am sure that you will not have a problem with this.
