have just lost my job but fortunately found another, on the downside it will still be a big drop in income. we were just about keeping our head above water and have no arrears YET!! but it will all go down the pan starting next month. My question is do i be proactive and try an iva before the arrears start or do i wait for the inevitable harassment and threats. I would be grateful if someone could give me some advice

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your job loss.

Do be proactie as you have said - speak to an expert sooner rather than later as you don't know what the job market will be like.

Either click on the 'Ask a question' link on the left hand side of the page or visit the comparison site www.iva.com for a list of companies and reviews. Give one or two a ring for some free advice.

Hi. In your position I would take the proactive route. Pop over to www.iva.com and have a word with a couple of the firms represented there. The advice is free and without obligation.

Also have a cruise around the forum to get a flavour for how it all works. Feel free to ask any questions, voice any concerns or ask for specific advice.

Don't worry about the calculator thingy. Try any of the professionals that post on here and you won't go far wrong, otherwise click on the link posted above. Until you speak to someone you won't know what is suitable for you.

Hi Graham

Given the recent change in your circumstances, resulting in an actual lower salary, you certainly don't need to wait until the accounts fall into default before seeking professional advice. I would do so straight away, because the sooner you start the sooner you will finish - and you have very good grounds for presenting an IVA.

Hi Grahamboy1 - sorry to read about the job - hope you manage to find another one soon.

As all the others have said - speak to professionals now - it doesn't mean you have to commit to anything but you can always explore your options and look at the what if's. You may find out that even with a new job the debts are still unmanageable without relying on credit which means sorting something out would be good anyway.

You've taken the first step by contacting the forum so you've started already. Glad you found us and we're all here to support you through it.

regards,
