I live abroad in Turkey but have UK debts, I work for a British company and have a UK bank account but no UK address, I manage to pay one credit card (I have run it up to the limit of 12,450) £260 a month but have a debt with Cahoot for about 9,000 that i cannot afford to pay anything on and have not paid it for almost 2 years. They are chasing me in the UK via my sisters address even though I have never lived there. I would like to clear my debts and the IVA seems the only way forward. Please could you advise me on the best steps to take. My sister is getting stressed as letters are coming for me to her address and she has no responsibility for this debt.
Can anyone tell me the best company/insolvency practioner to start the process.

I am afraid that an IVA is not an option for you if you are not a UK resident with a permanent address in the UK. How did you manage to get debts in the UK if you have never lieved over here? And why are they chasing you at your sisters?

Sorry my posting was unclear, I am a UK citizen and got the debts whilst living there, i moved to Turkey 4 years ago and my circumstances changed whereby i couldn't afford my repayments.I have no idea how they found out my sisters address but I have never lived with her at that address. My mother died 4 years ago and so that was the only address that I ever used to use.

OK - I am afraid that the lack of a UK address will prevent you from applying for an IVA in the UK. Why not petition in Turkey. Procedures there are governed by the rather badly sounding name - "Execution and Bankruptcy Law" - but don't let that put you off!

Melanie is correct, a permanent UK address is needed for you to apply for an IVA whilst abroad. Best of luck with your petition in Turkey.

Thank you for your replies, but I have no idea what you mean regarding a petition in Turkey?? how can i do this if my debt is in the UK? who would I go to see here and what exactly can they do?

You will need to take advice from an expert in Turkish insolvency law. I am afraid that my knowledge is limited to knowing the name of the act. Try a solicitor with experience of insolvency matters where you are based. It does not matter that the debts are in the UK - they follow you wherever you go in the world.

By the sound of it your debts are fairly old. Stay in Turkey for another three years and your creditors in the UK will most likely have written them off.
