I have a friend who has just returned to her family home in France. Upon arrival she discovered a series of documents. These it seems include a default judgement and notice if involuntary bankruptcy for Thursday 26th July.

The problem arose as she dropped out of a postgraduate course and was verbally assured that she would not have to pay the fees for the final two terms. The University however took her to court, sending all notices to France and got a judgement for UKP7400 against her.

My initial thought was that she should try to reach a deal with the university or solicitors regarding a staggered payment of the fees. How likely is it that they would agree to this and apart from that what should she be doing?

It is definately possible to still come to an arrangement with this creditor, but your friend needs to do this very quickly given the hearing date for next week. I suggest that she engages a solicitor to represent her and attend the hearing on her behalf, and seek an adjournment of the proceedings, as it may not be possible to come to an arrangement in such a tight timescale.
