My daughters marriage has just broken and she has been left with a council tax debt which unknown to her was not paid. She is about to go bankcrupt but seems to believe she has to clear the council tax debt before she can approach the courts. Is this correct? the bailiffs visited her yesterday which she has got until friday to pay the council tax. Can she still file for bankcrupcy and how does she stand with the unpaid council tax debt? I hope you can help with thanks.

Hi
Council Tax arrears should be included in bankruptcy, the full amount for the year to March 09 should be due if it hasn't been paid for some months.

Thank you Andy, she has 3 months payments outstanding but is not sure if it is from last year or this year as her letter from them doesn't explain. She intends to see them next week to find out more details.
with thanks LM
