Personally I hate Windows 7 and preferred XP! I don't think you'll get a new one with XP though as they all come with Windows 7 now.

You might be able to get one with Vista - I liked that as well.
I do prefer Windows 7 though.

That seems to be the problem, either refurb with XP or new costing twice as much with Windows 7 . The refurb looks a bit tatty but will do the job however is only guarenteed for 3 months. I really don't need an all singing all dancing one as just browse the net and write the odd email or letter

You're probably better off sticking with a refurb then if that's all you want to do - could you do one with Vista? It is better than XP and I think it still has MS support.

Why not go for a notebook instead of a laptop, doesn't have a cd/dvd drive but all internet capabilities are there. New one probably costs in the region of a refurb laptop.

Must admit I prefer a laptop - I like a large screen to look at.

Me too Jan, but if a cd drive isn't a must then netbooks are ideal and much more portable if that's an issue as well.

Would prefer a larger screen and a dvd writer. The thing that worries me is how long will a refurb last. This one has been repaired twice in the last 6 months and on the last occassion was refurbed!!!

I like my CD and DVD writers as well - I have an ipod but I also like to do a back up CD for those occasions when the ipod goes belly up and I lose everything that was on it!

I never do a back up CD! Anything I've downloaded from Itunes is in the store, so I can get them back.

I sometimes play a CD in the car rather than the ipod (especially if it needs recharging!)
I use the CD/DVD to do a back up when I get a new computer. Must admit that I do like my whistles and bells!

I've still got a lot of my CDs, although I'm planning on getting rid of some of them. I rarely listen to a CD now!
