Hi everyone,
My iva was accepted last week to my great relief. I have a bank account with A&L.I opened a bank account with HSBC last August but only got around to transferring it over when the proposal was being drafted. I cancelled the overdraft facility on this account but it still has a debit card. Is this ok? obviously there is no credit involved but I note on the forum people have found it difficult to get cash cards never mind debit cards! hopefully Im not doing anything untoward! If you could let me know.
Many thanks
regards
Dawn

Could you clarify which bank the debit card is actually with - HSBC or A&L?

If you are transfering your account to HSBC you should be aware that HSBC/ first direct have a policy of closing accounts of people with IVAs even if you have no debt with them.

Hi LouiseH

Oh dear.....I hope not! I did open a basic account with RBS prior to the proposal also so shall have to use that if HSBC cotton on!

Hi Dawn

As Louise says, HSBC do have a policy of closing accounts when their customers enter into IVA proceedings, so I would not rely on that debit card facility for much longer.

Hi Melanie,
Thanks for your prompt reply. Just out of curiosity, how will they know? Oh well never mind, its cash or nothing. Its quite scary getting used to alife without any cards, but in a way liberating and i do feel like ive had a second chance and very lucky that my iva was accepted, so if one of the inconveniences is the loss is the debit card, Ive got off lightly all in all.
Onwards and upwards
Regards
Dawn

I think they must scan the insolvency website, and match it up to their customer database.

IPs are required to register this information forthwith - this means straight away, so it is probably in progress right now.

Hi dawn, I went into the cooperative and told them about the debts and everything, they gave me a cashminder account with a visa electron debit card, I do have a cash account but its just inconvenient sometimes, they were really nice too.

Good luck

Of what I remember, it was almost two weeks before my name appeared on the insolvency register.
Nobody seems to have anything bad to say about the co-op cashminder account, so do consider that as an alternative. Afterall, they claim to be the 'ethical' bank. I couldnt argue with that, as Smile were one of my creditors and they were a pleasure to deal with through the IVA process (and voted in favour).
