I'm being asked at work to give up my monthly clothing allowance of £8.40.They are asking us to accept a lump sum payment of 4 years worth of allowance instead. This will be taxed. No good with maths and tax but this will be under £400 as a one off payment.I will be down each month. However, will the IP see it as a windfall and take away from me? Do you claim in your I&E for your work clothes?

Whilst it has the potential to be a windfall if it's effectively compensating you for expenses you incur it would be pretty unfair if you were forced to hand it over.

Check your proposal first and see if there is a de minimus in the windfall clause. Then speak to the Supervisor. I would imagine you'll be ok so long as you agree not to claim in future years for the expenditure compensated for by the allowance.

I hope not Cat. I receive a clothing allowance for laundering my sometimes bloodstained, often poo covered work clothes (ah the joys of nursing) Of course you will have to inform your IP but hopefully they will be fine about it. In fact in my IVA T&C's, anything under £500 is not considered a windfall [;)]

my mufti allowance just forms part of my salary.I never discussed it with the IP but they have had wage slips so will have seen it. I have a clothing allowance for 4 of us as part of the IVA of 120 a month but this is seperate.I wouldn't claim sperately for work clothes.I think the mufti allowance goes back to the olden days when all nurses wore a uniform and leather shoes/black tights?

Yes it does. I still wear the uniform, leather shoes but not the tights (my wife wears the tights in our house!) And well done on the £120 allowance for clothes think I might be bending my IP's ear next review (we get £100 for 6 of us)

You are welcome Cat. I find the tights pull very hard on my leg hairs!
