Hi Guys, some advice needed pls. I have the opportunity to commence a four year course starting in September. The problem is, I think I have read that, if you are in an IVA, any kind of Accountancy Registration would not be allowed. It is just an AAT course, which starts with a foundation type course in Yr 1. Does anyone know about this at all? Work have agreed to pay, but know nothing about my proposed IVA, so I don't want to embarrass myself if it is not allowed. Will just have to come up with some excuse for not doing it. Kazzy x

Hi Kazzy - not sure about this. I know an IVA affects it but I'm sure you can do the course.

Hopefully someone will be able to give you sound advice. Be a shame to miss out on a great opportunity.

Hey Kazz - found this on an internet site:

What are the advantages of an IVA ?

* Professionals eg solicitors/accountants will be able to continue to practice without losing their practicing certificates

Hi Kazzy

You should be ok as IVA's only affect those in professional life ie Fully qualified accountants. The AAT is a lower but good qualification and there should be no problem!

Go for it and good luck!

Thanks Ray, still not sure whether I'll cope with all this with the IVA going on, the extra studying and full time hours at work but will need to enrol soon if I am going for it. I take it the college doesn't check the public register for these courses then? Kazzy x

Your IVA will not affect this - and go for it AAT is a great course. I got first prize for passing those exams - in 1984!!!!

Wow Melanie! That was the year I left school! [:D] [:D] [:D] I thought you may have done this course at some point during your career. It seems ironic that I have been put forward for this course. Funnily enough, in my job, I deal with the company finances and payroll and have no problem managing other people's money. Just can't manage my own very well [:(!] I think it will be quite a committment but I think it will be worth it if I can muster up the pluck to do it. I just wasn't sure whether the cost of it, albeit would not even hit my pay packet, would have to be taken into account in the IVA - a ridiculous thought I know, but I just wasn't sure. Thanks for your replies guys, I might just go for it !

Most accountants are dreadful at doing their own accounts! I was always getting caught running to the tax office at 10pm on every 31 Jan begging them to take my hurriedly completed tax returns - that even I employ an accountant of my own now! Sad but true!

Melanie, I have read a bit more about this course, and it says that you have to become a student member of the AAT whilst doing the course. Will that be a problem with the IVA - do they run checks? Kazzy

I would not have thought so - and by being a student member you will get a lot of advice and support so well worth joining.

Kazzy what a great course....I started this a long time ago and I loved it but then got pregnant and my priorities changed. OH has done it also but then decided he didn't want to do that anymore and went into IT.

Good luck and enjoy. X

Hope you do the course, I did it many years ago and it is a well recognised qualification.
