.....ie not a windfall or overtime, just money given for house repairs, clothes etc or to put in savings account?
Is there a limit as to how much this can be?
My ex MIL has paid for a holiday for us for several years now and helped out with car repairs, school trips for my sons etc.....what is the maximum she would be able to give at any one time?

I am sure different IPs will have different views on this.

Personally I would have thought a couple of hundred as a cash gift, for a specific occasion (birthday, Christmas etc)would be considered OK. Otherwise it would be best to get the donor to buy / pay for whatever item is acquired themselves and give you the actual item, rather than the cash for it.

There are some IP's who, I imagine, covet every single penny.
