It depends on how deep the clearance goes I think. If it's CRB then it only checks criminal records, nothing else.

This won't be a problem for you. You're likely to be asked to complete a financial assessment when you apply for SC clearance, and also again approx 2 years later to review your financial status.

It also depends upon which industry you work in as some won't entertain you if you are in an IVA or bankrupt.

I'm just curious here but for Top Secret DV clearance do they check life history and life insolvency history or is it limited to say 10 years?

No idea on that one. I know that to join the Police Force you have to have been free of either an IVA or BR for three years before they will entertain you.

I work in Defence. I was cleared at SC level and this has recently run out. SC is for 10 years and they do ask the dreaded question...'have you ever....'. I am out of my IVA now so I am hoping they will be fine about it and renew me for the 10 years. I will give them all the details. Over the years I have read posts on here where provided you are honest on the application they will clear you. I have heard some people get cleared but not automatcially for 10 years as they want to keep an eye on your finances so maybe 2-5 years, I heard someone in a similar postion to me got a automatic 10 year renewal but they were toally up front about everything which is key to getting approval. I have 20 years + in my profession so i am hopeful for the 10 years. They haven't approached me yet for a renewal but I know to expect it any time soon.

As for anything above SC, you do get grilled and looked into considerably more. A friend of mine had DV (Delevoped Vetting). They had people come to their house to interview you about family, love life, religion and political beliefs, they go through your bank statements and basically leave no stone unturned. As for Top Secret which is a very high level I would expect you would have to be squeaky clean in all areas for that.

An IVA shouldn't affect your being SC cleared.

I'm SC cleared for my current employment and my being in an IVA isn't a problem. My SC clearance was successfully renewed about 2 years ago - as part of the renewal process I had to complete another financial questionaire, in which I mentioned that I am in an IVA because I realised that this was a better financial solution for me than a DMP (which I was previously in, and was in at the time I commenced my current employment). Just ensure that you're honest about being in an IVA and the circumstances which led to your situation - I believe it would only be if you did not mention the IVA at all that you would have problems.

That seems a bit unfair for new recruits to the police force seeing as current officers can do IVAs and many have also gone bankrupt without adverse effects on their job.
