could the reason for me being unable to withdraw cash from my new mastercard be because i'm not using the right cash machine for the card?

I wouldn't have thought so, I think you can use them in all cash machines.

Have you spoken to customer services? They should be able to help you.

Normal now to have an automated phoneline to activate the card before 1st use.
