We opened a Nationwide account shortly before entering our IVA. Whilst we are not dissatisfied with Nationwide the lack of a debit card is a nuisance and, after all the recommendations on this site, wished we'd gone for the Co-op. However, today we had a letter from Nationwide saying they were replacing the cash card (for both current account and flexaccount holders)by a cash+ card between June and September this year. The new card can be used at retailers, for internet purchases, 'phone purchases etc. They don't use the name "debit card" but I can't see the difference. This seems like very good news for those of us in an IVA or for those setting out on their journey. Jan, I know you also bank with Nationwide and wonder if I have mis-read the Nationwide circular?

That would be good news if it were a debit card John for the shops. You could always get a cashminder account to run alongside the Nationwide one if you wanted?

Not received anything about this at all John. I'll have to keep an eye open on the post the next few days.

Sounds good though.

I take it you just have the cash card account John?

Yes, Jan - just the basic flexaccount, but the the new cash card+ will replace ALL cash cards, if I read it correctly. It does say that it will also replace cheque books. Maybe we are going to benefit from the massive profits the bank will get by stopping issuing cheque books?

I do hope so, mind you we just have a basic cash card flex account with no cheque book.

Don't know if this will make a difference at all.

Does this account come with a Visa card or Visa Electron?

I am with the Co-op which are ok, but would prefer to be with a bank with a better branch network.

In another thread I mentioned I tried to open an account with Barclays and got turned down, so wondered if this would be a viable alternative?

Thanks johnh for letting people know about this.

Still not had my letter!

I think it is just a cash card plus which can be used for purchases. Not sure if it would be classed as Electron or what.

You may find it hard to open an account with Nationwide now you are in an IVA.

You can always try though.
