Hi,
I successfully opened a Natwest Current account (no overdraft facility) just as I started the IVA process - can they close it if they discover I am entering an IVA?
Thanks

Hi Andy,

Banks can chose to close accounts, especially if you have debts with them.

Natwest are pretty good and I wouldn't think they would close your account, especially as its a basic one, unless they are one of your creditors?

Hi,

I am with the Natwest and as far as I am aware (unless they are a creditor) they will not close your account

I opened a Natwest Step Account prior to my IVA and they have never closed it and it works very well for me

I had been with the HSBC for year prior to turning to the Natwest during my IVA process and wish I'd found them years ago as even though I have the Step Account when I go in they greet me by name and feel welcome and nothing is too much trouble for our branch.

Thanks for the replies guys - it's not the step account - I just requested an ordinary current account with no overdraft or cheque book. Hopefully I'll be okay.Cheers.

I think you will be okay. I initially opened a step account when I started my iva process but then asked to upgrade it to a current account with no overdraft. I had no problems doing that. I have found natwest to be a really good bank.

You'll be ok with an ordinary account I would think if you've not defaulted or entered an IVA as yet. I often wished I'd gone over to Natwest as soon as I realised I had problems and not so far down the road.

Yep I agree with all the previous posts, I'm with NATwest and have found them very pleasant to deal with. I have a step account which is great and comes with a Visa Debit card, so no issues there. Only problem i have found is that the card isn't recognised in a lot of pay at the pump petrol stations (its accepted inside ok, just not at the pump). I spoke to my branch and asked them why and they said it was probably due to their change from Electron to Visa, the number range has moved, but it can take a long while for all the systems to catch up.

Natwest are quite sympathetic - HSBC and First Direct are not. They close accounts even if you have no problems with them.

I agree with Kallis3 before we opened our NatWest account, we made an appointment with HSBC and they were asking all sorts of personal questions about our finances etc. So made our excuses and left and went across the road and opened NatWest Step account with no problems or nosey staff!
