Hi all

I am part way through an IVA. I have just been offered a job in the Far East and have a few concerns/ questions that I am hoping someone may be able to help me with.

Firstly, I will contact my Insolvency Practitioner to make sure that it is ok for me to move and work abroad.

The company I am moving to intend to pay me a local wage and an additional offshore amount. I am hoping that I will be able to get a local account.

However, for the offshore amount I will need an offshore account. This can be a UK account, however my present account is with the cooperative bank (cashminder account) and I think the t&c's state that I need to be a UK resident to hold the account. Does anyone know of a bank that will be likely to offer me an account as a non-UK resident?

I think I'll get a pre-paid credit card as well to offer more flexibility - there appear to be a couple that don't charge for foreign withdrawals, however I think you need to be a UK resident for them as well.

Also, does anyone know whether my IVA will cause difficulties in the VISA application process?

First of all congratulations on your new job. I am sure that your IP will have no problems with you moving and working abroad - his main concern will be that you make the payments as agreed and that you maintain contact with him.

I am not an expert on offshore accounts but would suggest that you contact the Co-Op and explain your situation to them. I am sure that they deal with this sort of thing all the time. There are lots of people who move abroad for work purposes who will have the same problem. Otherwise I think that it would be a case of trying to open an account with another bank who offers an offshore account. I think the same would go for a pre-paid credit card.

With regards to your visa, the main thing is to be perfectly honest in your application. Though I have not had a client move to the far east, I have had clients move to America and Australia

Hi there and welcome to the forum. You lucky thing - I wish I could emigrate to the Far East!!

It should be no problem paying your IVA contributions from abroad - but if there is any change in your disposable income as a result you will need to face making higher (or lower) contributions. Also there should be no reason why you cannot keep your existing bank account.

I doubt the IVA will affect your ability to get a VISA - but best to check this one out with the immigration department of the respective country.

I'd be happy to emigrate anywhere to get away from this country![:D]

Dont think the army will have me, Im 40 soon and cant get up the stairs without being out of breath.

David - make sure he is really up on current affairs at that time - and try coaching him a little if he will let you. They are bound to ask his opinions on newsworthy items of the day, and he should be well informed without being opinionated. It is good to practice this in the meantime, and of course your ex-padre is bound to be able to help.

He will sail through it - but do let me know how he gets on.

Will do Melanie and thank you. He is very good at taking advice - he has two Army role models - one Gen Michael Rose and the other Gen Mike Jackson but Gen Rose is the main one. Fr is helping him as well and our son is President of the School debating Society so he should be able to express himself ok. Will keep you informed and thanks for your advice - will need it again no doubt!

Mike Jackson was my husband's Commanding Officer when he was with the Parachute Regiment. A very, very good soldier - and a perfect role model.

I don't think so - but of course he was Chief of the General Staff following Gulf War 2.

He is more famously known for refusing to blockade Pristina Airport during the Kosvan crisis in the late 1990s - when he refused a direct order on grounds that it would potentially have drawn the Russians into a wider conflict.
