Hi Everyone,
Just a quickie regarding a Visa debit card 'renewal'.
Before my IVA was agreed I opened a Smile (co-op) current account without any credit or overdraft and a Visa (not electron) debit card.
When my debit card expiry date eventually arrives, will they do a credit check to issue me a new Visa debit card or does it just renew automatically and a new card sent to me in the post?
My obvious concern is that they do a credit check that I will fail and close my account and then I will have to find a new account.
I know that certain banks do a regular credit check on you.
Has anyone else had any problems having their Visa debit cards renewed?

When I went BR I was told by Lloyds TSB that I could keep my Visa debit card, but when it expired they probably wouldn't send me another one, only a basic cash card. In the end I had to send the Visa to the OR so I don't know what would have happened.
I wouldn't have thought that they would close your account, but you might not get a ful debit card.
Sorry that's not much help, but hopefully someone who has been through this will be along to give you better advice.

Oh god I hope this doesn't happen!
I have a visa debit card with Lloyds TSB and use it all the time - as in petrol, food shopping etc.
Surely common sense would prevail here - they can see we have accounts that have no overdraft etc, so how can they be worried about us.....when we cannot get any credit on the Account anyway?
I too thought it was an automatic process - but then again.....!

It could well have been because I was bankrupt that I wouldn't get a full card. I might be worth giving the bank a call anonymously and asking what their policy is.

I would assume that it will just be an automatic thing, they may have a look at the account to see if its in good standing and had no problems over the couple of yrs that its been open.
Hopefully thats all that they will do.....

We only have cashpoint cards and they expired this month. We've just had new ones sent out to us without having to ask for renewal.

We are both in an IVA and have been for some time. I have a Natwest debit card and my wife has a smile debit card. We informed them ourselves about our IVA at the time (smile was actually a creditor). They are both for basic accounts with no overdraft facilities and were both just automatically renewed at expiry,we have not had any problems.

I have a visa debit card with Abbey - I have been in my IVA for coming up 4 years, my card was replaced only last week.
As long as you keep a good record with whom you bank with, it shouldnt be a problem.
