Hi everyone, I have written to the forum before and you have all been very helpful, but can you tell me if I go bankrupt ( I have an IVA at moment but may have to give up work due to health reasons and take the bankrupt route) do the baliffs come around my house and take my stuff and my dog. Its just I was watching a programme on TV last night and they took everything of his and his cat....I am so worried now as I would die if they took my little dog his is all I have got. I dont own my house I rent from Council and have no car and no savings and really no assets other then my furniture tv etc., Can Melenie or somebody who definately knows the answer please help me !! thank you

Hi there and welcome back!
A bailiff will absolutely not take your little dog from you - perish the thought. I don't know what programme you were watching, but they are giving out a very misleading message if that happened.
Bailiff's, with the correct legal paperwork and the permission of the Court can take your personal possessions in satisfaction of debts, but not your pets. How much do you actually owe to your creditors and are you doing anything to actually try and resolve your problems?

That's a terrible message for a programme to put out. I don't know what it was either, but it was really irresponsible.
If you go BR you won't have bailiffs taking anything. You would list any assets on the form for the OR, and no-one would go to your house.
Please don't let these programmes frighten you x

Dreadful message to put out. I really don't know what that programme could be.

That's awful, I wonder what programme that was on. I don't think people need to see that on TV!

It never ceases to amaze me how programs on a TV can play on peoples minds and cause undue concern(as it has in this case). Talk about scaremongering!!!

Baliffs can not take pets as all above have stated. As to what they can take it appears that you have very little to be taken. If you were to go bankrupt then all items needed for your reasonable domestic needs would be excluded. This is tv, couch, fridge etc. If you have any valuable items these may be taken to be sold.
If you do not go bankrupt and then creditors start enforcing judgements and send bailiffs round there are rules as to what they can and can not do, for example the goods they take have to be sufficient to pay the debt so they can not take a £50 tv to clear a £5000 debt. I appreciate that rules are difficult to enforce when a baliff is at the door demanding everything. If your IVA fails and you do not go bankrupt you should speak to your IP who may be able to point you in the right direction,

This programme wasnt called 'bailiffs' was it? Currently showing on people on virgin. It shows you how they operatebut is generally tax debts and none payment of fines etc.

If anyone came near Nia, I don't know what I would do, that's really horrible, I'm glad I didn't watch it, can you imagine the complaints.

I think Panorama did something on debt last night but I missed it, not that Panorama would ever sensationalise anything ever ... would they.

Hi I have seen this pro gramme before and its called Beat the bailiff. The view was because the cat was a pedigree then it was worth some money. I remember thinking at the time I am glad I only have moggies and not worth a bean, but everything to me.

Harry would have their hand off if they tried to take him - unless they tempted him with a bag of Joe and Jill's chicken and rice biscuits of course!
