In january when we were first looking into an IVA we opened a account with barclays knowing that we had no credit with them and that in the future once we had sold our property we would be looking into an IVA. Well last week we changed all our direct debits (household) all our wages/ benefis and registered for online banking ec. Everything was sorted and we were relieved that we has sorted everything..

Well yesterday i reieved a letter from one of my creditors Goldfish had transfereed to Barclays ovoiusly sending me into a panic that ALL of our money wassitting in a Barclays account. After speaking to Melanies team i was advised to def open another account just to make sure our money was safe.. So ended up searching the net and applying for basic accouns but was declined by about 3 of them so in the end we rushed into town with all our ID documents our 8 month old son, me in tears and went into Abbey (we have no credit with them) and my OH has an old ISA account with him that he has never used , the lady was really nice i was upfront about the possible IVA and so we opened a basic account with just a cash card etc..

The relief that our money was safe was immense, but the stress i felt was enoromus too. I was really gutted to because i had been so impressed with Barclays and there great customer service but i guess th emost important thing is that our money is safe and we are making afresh.. Just got to sort all the dd ans wages out again now! What a nightmare!!!

Oh Tanya what a shame to have sorted it out and then to have to do it all again . Never mind now though at least you have another account and as soon as you have the debits transferred it is sorted. It is a shame about Barclays but better to be safe than sorry. Take a deep breathe now and relax and get back on track. You will be fine with Melanie, advice and reasssurance is always there and that is so important in the early stages.

Exactly the same thing happened to me when I was setting up my IVA. I had a nice new account set up with RBS ... only to find out that a couple of my creditors were associated with them.

I ended up rushing around and going into my local Nationwide branch and opening a basic account ... and I haven't looked back since. Nationwide have been great.

A few weeks ago I tried to withdraw £30 from a local cashpoint and the screen said "please wait for your money" ... and then didn't give me any! I phoned my local Nationwide branch and to verify my ID the lady asked me what one of the balances on my accounts was (I have a couple of online savings accounts set up with them). I didn't have a clue how much was in my account ...then I suddenly remembered that I have £38,000 sat in one waiting for my F&F!!! ... the lady was impressed that I had forgotten. When I explained that it was the proceeds from a re-mortgage the lady asked why I hadn't gone to Nationwide as I am an 'impeccable' customer. This is the irony of being an 'impeccable' customer but being a bad credit 'risk'!

I too have changed to a basic account from Nationwide. Originally, when we had problems with HSBC we decided to change and went to Nationwide. We had no credit problems at the time, and I checked my Experian record which was fine. After many weeks of waiting, they would only give us a basic account and said my credit rating was rubbish. I checked with Experian who said, no it was fine, and they couldn't understand why I had been refused. We went from Nationwide to Barclays, and in 90 minutes had been approved for a full cheque account and a credit card! I also went on to get a credit card for myself (will I never learn?) I have now had to resort to my basic account. But it just goes to show that different banks have different ideas as to their ideal customer regardless of your circumstances

Thanks for the replys. It was so fustrating at the time but am now in a more positive mood.. Im hoping we get our new cards soon as we need to start accessing wages ect..

I'm glad you got yourself sorted, this is always a risk and I suppose we are always half expecting that lettert or phonecall cancelling our account.

Glad you got that sorted as that must have been really worrying thinking all your money was going to disapear[:0]

However careful you are it seems you can still get caught out, I was so confused when I set up a new account as had so many creditors I didn't think I would find an unconnected one to any of my creditors[:I]
