Hi all,

Successfully completed my IVA around 2007 so over 15years or so. but have since lost my completion certificate. Had not really realised I had to keep it for life. These are not able to be reproduced since it is so long ago the companies have removed me, data retention apparently

So some companies will not touch me as I have had an IVA in the past. Annoying but that’s just how it is. I thought my broker had found me one with Coventry Building society who didn’t mind I had had one prior, but they have since said as I cannot provide the discharge certificate they won’t proceed. Helpfully after a hard credit check. So much for brokers choosing the right company! I picked a few free broker, probably my error but honestly didn’t think I’d need a specialist for a debt I had so long ago

So now what? This incredibly important document, that if lost through fire, theft or flood is not replaceable, this seems somewhat daft to me. Am I going to have any chance?

I was going for 5% deposit, so appreciate not as easy, but kind of thought IVA was a solution to improve life not to hang over my head forever.

The fact this is a lifelong issue isn’t something I really absorbed and the fact this important document needs protecting like it’s gold is another.

The fact nearly 2 decades since I took this out that it would still need specialist broker has really depressed me. It would have made me much more carefully consider

Thing is, I guess, you needed help at the time --- had you defaulted or been made bankrupt, the ramifications could still have been the same, and not all lenders ask 'that' question.

As for the importance of the certificate ( such as it is), I usually advise getting several copies, stored in different places as well as scanning a copy onto the computer and back up flash drive. I also have a copy in my email archives ( I was emailed the certificate before I was sent a hard copy -- might be worth having a look in your email archives, just in case).

You explaining the importance is great, but my company all those many years ago didn’t. As was explained it was a way to solve my problems but the lifelong impacts were not explained, as I understood it, I made mistakes and got in a bad situation but 6 years after I’d be able to reset.

Again, maybe that is better explained now to people

It is what it is, the fact you cannot get it back in the future, that is a problem. Lose a birth certificate or a bank statement and a fee will get them. Lose a discharge cert and there is nothing that can be done

It's worth doing a general search on your computer and in your emails- my certificate goes back to 2011 and its still in my email search and have to saved multiple times and printed.

It’s gone and deleted

However, the insolvency service have created me a letter saying I started and it completed. They went well above and beyond and whilst not the exact certificate it is something that might hold enough weight for persuasion

As it turns out a broker found me a cheaper rate, no fees and cash back who don’t need this so hopefully that’ll go through okay even given I have the previous hard check

So, maybe it’ll turn out for the best. Fingers crossed!
