If i enter into to an IVA, i can only have a basic bank account, will i still be able to set up direct debits and standing orders, as this is needed for my landlord etc?

I have recently taken out a basic bank account with Natwest a Step Account and have spent this week sorting out my direct debits from one to another so yes on that account and I think in general you can as I know I looked at a few accounts before making a choice of who to go with. Coop do standing orders too for definate as I also have an account with them.

Hi wheresstu,

Yes its possible to have a basic account whit direct debits. I believe Abbey, Co-op and Natwest allow you to have dd and standing orders.

It is possible to hold a basic account which offers a direct debit facility.

I believe there are alot of lenders who have basic bank accounts which still have D.D & S.O facility.

Does anyone know if Nationwide are still opening account for people in an IVA? I know they stopped opening accounts for people who are bankrupt but I don't know about IVAs.

Hi wheresstu
As soon as I knew that I wanted to try for an iva, I opened a new bank account with the Coop, as my credit rating was still good at the time I have a normal current account with cheque book, visa debit card, direct debit facility, etc. The only thing I specified was no overdraft facility as you are not allowed (for obvious reasons!!!) further credit in an iva.
you need to pick a new bank that is not one of your creditors and I would advise you to do this as soon as poss

Good Luck and this forum is ace for asking any questions you need answering as someone always knows the answer and everyone understands x

Sorry Lula, I didn't mean to worry you! I'm BR and I have my account with Nationwide - I rang them and they told me that they have no plans to close accounts that are already open, but will no longer offer accounts to undischarged bankrupts. As Andy says providing you go into a branch and ask for a basic Flexaccount you should be ok.

I really don't think you'll have any problems with your account Lula.
