Minor family disagreement. Our washing machine is 3 years old. We renew the guarantee every year and just received the renewal. £62 paid upfront. That would use most of our contingency money. I say we don't renew, put £20 away a month for 12 months and get a brand new one!! Wife says too risky. If we keep renewing then we will always have an old washing machine!! I seriously begrudge the £62. What do you think?

Mmmm...has it gone wrong before...? is it working ok at the moment..? Can you save the £20 per month...?

If you didnt pay the £62 and it packed up, is there anyone who you could turn to to lend you the money for a new one and pay them the £20 per month...?

I can see both sides...and its hard cos IMO a washing machine is a must.

It's working fine. I posted this thread under 'money saving tips' did not expect it to appear in 'Hot topics' LOL. It's a gamble I suppose. I could ask my mother in law for the money but I would really rather not! It's just that the contingency is supposed to be for the Fridge/Freezer/Oven/Hob/central heating etc. In 6 months it will be £200 and I can breath easier because for sure one of the above will pack in!!

I think i might risk it and save the £62. Do you know any repair men , firends handy with washing machines..that could help out IF it did pack up. x

I agree. Don't pay the extended warranty & save the £20 a month. If the washing machine did fail in the meantime, you can buy a decent second hand one for about £50 - that's what we did. Peace of mind is nice, but £62 is a lot of money to pay out in one go.

You can rent washing machines!!?? Well thats it then we will put the money by if the machine packs in we can rent! Saving.... £62 [:D]

i've had my current washing machine for nearly 9 years, never broken down never paid for any warranties, and it wasn't an expensive one when I bought it. I could have 2 more washing machine with the money I would have paid on warranties. Personally wouldn't bother with warranties, first job I applied for was with an electric retailer, they told me their biggest profits came from warranty sales, put me off parting with my cash for life so I suppose I predujiced.

Bet money (if I had any) that my washing machine will pack up now I've cursed it!

LOL yes you bet it will. Thanks folks. I am a bit embarrassed talking about a piddly washing machine in hot topics. I am keeping the £62 (pending wife’s agreement once she gets back in tonight from a 13 hour hard graft shift. Think I might leave it till tomorrow!)

I'm with the others - save the money! We have got a warranty on the fridge freezer as it was only £11 for 10 months and it's now covered for 5 years.

We had a warranty on the TV and never again - Mastercare(!) broke it! When Dave tried to claim Currys replaced it with another dodgy one, I complained quite loudly in the shop and the manager threatened to have me arrested! In the end Dave had to pay extra to get a decent TV. It put me off extended warranties for life!

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

ahhh max debt...run ya wife a nice bubble bath and get her a bar of Dairy Milk. Bless her, i'd wait till tomorrow too.

It might just be a piddling washing machine and for some its like..just buy another, but for people like us its not that simple is it. you'll be fine xx

Hi - mmy washer is 8 years old, the OR allows no contigency but said if it fails that I will have to rent one.. hmmm ... I wonder if the rental company would let an undischarged bankrupt rent anything ?

I didnt know you could rent washing machines. I wouldnt use a cover plan, I went to trading standards when comet left me without the fridge freezer over easter cos they couldnt get the part to fix it. I stood in the shop and they threatend to get the police as I wouldnt leave without a refund, I said fine go ahead my children would be better fed at the police station than on tinned tripe I have no choice but to buy. They gave me a refund.

Just asking bagpuss what does IMO mean? I cant work it out and I keep reading it.

sorry Lily...it means In My Opinion...or there is IMHO..same but with honest in it.
