I`ve just been accepted by hsbc for a basic bank account and recieved my cash card, I read that they will probably shut this account down because i`m currently trying for an iva and my creditors meeting should be at the end august, is this likely? tried natwest but they turned me down
thanks

Hi crg, I have read on here before that banks have closed bank accts down when you enter into an iva, i would suggest that you use Alliance and leicetser or Nationwide as they seem really good. Good luck

Hi craig I think you are right hsbc are apparently closing accounts of those in an iva and bankrupt. the best thing to do might be to ring them and just ask that way you can get another account. If you do need one I am with thinkbanking they will acceot alkl and dont do credit checks ,there is a maestro card but there is also a monthly fee of 12.50 but you can get no charges with this account. .

Hi,
I was accepted for my IVA last August, straight after we'd opened an account with First Direct (part of HSBC). I was honest with them from the start about our IVA application and the account ran perfectly until October. They rang me and said that it was a new clause in their T&C that they will not run accounts for anyone in an IVA so they were giving me 30 days notice before the account would be closed. I didn't have a clue it was about to happen and it was a bombshell so soon after the elation when the IVA was accepted.
They will PROBABLY close your account as soon as they find out you're in an IVA so if I were you, I would get out now!
I went straight to COOP for a Cash Minder account. I applied over the phone and heard back within 4days or so. I have access to online banking and an Electron card which is a Godsend and I can pay direct debits and standing orders from it too. They offer the account for people in IVAs and undischarged bankrupts too and they've been fantastic with us - I cannot recommend them enough.
Get out of HSBC and don't give them the privilege of making you feel like erm...rubbish...(!) when they cancel your account - It's terrible working to a timescale when you're trying to sort a new account, salary payments, direct debits etc when your current account is being closed.
Hope this helps - and I hope your weather's better than ours this morning. It's peeing down here. So much for summer, eh?!

I think at the moment craig a lot of the banks etc are changing theur policy on accepting iva's, I dont see the harm if it is a basic account with no credit. Maybe its because they cant make any money from us.

Although the Nationwide website says that they do not accept bankrupts and people in an IVA you may well be accepted if you apply in a branch. There are a few of us on here with Nationwide accounts and Zoe rang up to confirm whether they are still accepting undischarged bankrupts and the answer was yes.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

Hi
The secret is to obtain a basic account before your IVA is registered, only HSBC and First Direct actively search the insolvency register and close accounts post IVA,that we know of.
