I understand that I will have to close my current bank account, but won't I then only be entitled to a basic account with cashpoint card? I am concerned as my landlords will only accept a direct debit along with many other providers.

I am sure that you will be able to source an account which will allow direct debits. There will no doubt be someone who posts shortly who can reccomend such an account.

I believe that several of the regular forum users bank with Think Banking which does charge a manintenance fee but I am sure offers direct debit facilities.

Hi rvh,

Think Banking may be a solution for you, but i think there are a few more basic accounts with standing orders and direct debit facility such as Abbey - basic current account.

I've now got a Cashminder account with the Co-operative Bank - I've got a debit card (Visa Electron), internet banking and I can also set up direct debits and standing orders etc. Also their customer service staff are always polite and friendly and very efficient.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

Yes Think Banking WILL provide you with an account.You can pay DD etc and you will get a Maestro debit card.The fee is £12.50 a month with a £25 set up fee.
If you are against paying a fee you can try the Cooperative bank as they have a basic account offering an electron card and DD facility.

Hi

Royal Bank of Scotland offer a basic account whereby DD and standing orders can be set up - AND THERE IS NO MONTHLY CHARGE!!!!! The only drawback is - it is not a debit card. You can only withdraw money from the bank or from a cash machine. I have found this brilliant- if I withdraw £20, go into the supermarket, all I have is £20!!!!!

If you are happy paying the £12.50 a month fee (and no other charges ever as you can not go over drawn or have payments bounce) then I would recommend Think Banking. They have always been friendly and quick when I have spoken to them. Also you can set up DD and standing orders and the Maestro card is excepted in most places.
