My car came with a proper spare, which is rare these days, although it is a steel rather than an alloy that the rest of the car has. For some reason i also have a can of that instant rapair in the boot, works like the mountain bike stuff, some sort of white juice that temp fixes the hole.

I think the spare is the only original tyre i have for the car, with the money its cost me this week, in the summer im going to invest in a proper set of tyres, at the moment i have cheap ones to get me through. Tbh i notice the lack of grip in the snow! :-)

Hopefully we've seen the last of the snow for this winter!!!

I always go for mid price tyres. While the others are legal I think the spare has more tread on it than the rest of the tyres put together as it doesn't look like it's been used!

If anyone is having trouble getting their nuts off (the wheel, thank you, tut tut) take your wheel brace to you local scrap dealer and see if they have a long (50cm or slightly longer) piece of metal tube just big enough tofit over the handle of your wheel brace, with the extra leverage you will be able to loosen most nuts.

Glad you got to work okay Skippy.

I'm lucky I have a great local garage who will come to the house to change tyres if need be for free. I have breakdown cover and would't attempt to change a tyre, especially as most of my driving is done on motorways.

I'm good at checking for oil and water etc. and know how to jumpstart a car, so not totally useless [:I]

Also you could ask the person fitting your wheels to torque the nuts with a torque wrench to the recommended torque(not 3 white knuckles and a grunt!!)

But the extra leverage of an extension bar works well.

Well I went to the tyre place this morning and I'm now £124 poorer! They repaired the tyre with the screw in it but I needed another one replaced. I half expected it as I had an advisory on it when I had the MOT done in August and I had 2mm of tread left and the legal limit is 1.6mm. I also had to have the tracking done as it was so far out it was affecting one of the tyres.

Nightmare Skip! although, I wouldn't have had the other tyre done yet, when I had a company car, they wouldn't authorise tyre changes until you were on the legal limit so with 0.4mm tread still on I would have got a bit more wear out of that tyre!

Skip that is not good - but at least the car is sorted which is the main thing!!

We could spend all day trying to sort things for tyres etc., but as long as you are happy (ok - a bit poorer!!) then that is main thing!!

We've got Kwik Fit and Merit Tyres practically next door to each other but I really hate Kwik Fit - when we drove past today there was a Kwik Fit member of staff outside looking like Dappy from N-Dubz and I didn't want him anywhere near my car!

Merit Tyres have always been really polite and professional when I've gone there so I stayed loyal to them.

I went to take a wheel off a car, that was put at a garage with a air gun, (which aolly wheels should not be) could not more it at all.
that was with a tube 3ft long on the end my mate 17st jumping on the end.
took it back to the garage and told them to undo both wheel and use the right tool.

I'd call my son in law every time bless him, I'm sure he gets fed up with me but he likes roast beef dinners as it's all I have to pay him for the work he does and the parts of course.

I agree customer service has a big factor in why I go somewhere local. x
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.
